Ded Moroz is a Symbol of Russian Winter

Have you ever heard about Ded Moroz? Although Father Frost or Ded Moroz is a key figure of Russian New Year and a Symbol of Russian Winter!

As you may know New Year celebration is much more significant event in Russia even than Christmas. The majority of Russians stick to Orthodox religion that is why Christmas celebration is on January 7th.

Appearence

This white-bearded man wearing a red coat and bringing gifts to children slightly resembles well-known Santa Claus – the character from American culture.

Birthday

November 18th Ded Moroz celebrates his birthday and many people meet in Veliky Ustyug, Russia congratulate him. Colleagues from all over the world try to come and congratulate him: Snow Maidens from Kostroma and Togliatti, Fathers Frost from Ukraine and Belorussia, Little Frost Pakkayne (Karelian personage), Chys Khan (Ruler of Cold) from Yakutia, Sagan Ubugun from Buryatia, Tol Babay from Bashkiria and many others.

Celebration

Usually guests see the performance with fairytale characters as well as show on playgrounds of the residence. After that Ded Moroz participates in the teleconference and culinary duel. The main event of the day take place in the evening – Father Frost lights up the first New Year tree and then begins his traditional winter journey. Except Russian cities, he usually visit Germany, Latvia, Slovakia and other places, where children are now waiting for their beloved and kind “Santa”.

It’s time!

Winter in Russia is famous not only because of its snowy weather and temperature above zero but also by period of holydays. Most of people have a long vocation from 1 to 10 January.
