August 22, Russia celebrates National Flag Day. The date only became a holiday in 1994 to commemorate the events of 1991 when the three-color flag was first hoisted over the white marble building of the Russian government to replace the Soviet red flag with hammer and sickle.

The 4th of November is a National Unity Day in Russia. Unity Day was introduced by the Kremlin in 2005 to replace the communist holiday of November 7 celebrating the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. November 4 now marks the liberation of Russia from Polish-Lithuanian invaders in 1612.
