Best St Petersburg Museums by National Geographic
The famous American magazine has published the best 5 museums to visit in St. Petersburg for foreign guests.
The list includes well known museums as well as hidden from a usual St. Petersburg visitor. Fortunately, all of them are located in the city center or within an easy reach.
State Russian Museum is probably a "must" for every guest of our city. There you will see one of the most prominent collection of Russian art dated from the 10th to 21st century. The museum is housed in neoclassical Mikhailovsky Palace located not far from Nevsky Prospekt.
The Hermitage was the pride and joy of Catherine the Great, a Russian Empress, who started collecting pieces of art from all over the word. Today you will see there not only the paintings of the most famous artists from different epochs but various other cultural artifacts: ancient armor, golden carriages, sculptures, Egytian mummies and more. It is housed in magnificent Winter Palace built in 1764. The Hermitage is truly the heart of St. Petersburg.
Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art constantly renews its exhibitions. You will find there paintings and sculptures of Russian artists and even singers. One of the most interesting features of the museums is called U-Space - a set of chambers with unusual interactive installations. Erarta is located on Vaislievsky Island, a bit farther from all the landmarks but easily accessible by public transport.
Faberge Museum is not as ancient as the others above but no less fascinating. You will see all the exhibits in one visit but leave with an unforgettable impression. The jeweled eggs are truly remarkable. But the collection also includes other artifacts. Faberge Museum is also located not far from Nevsky Prospekt.
Samoilov Family Museum is not usually included into the shortlist St. Petersburg attractions but you will not regret visiting it. It is a museum-apartment which used to be a home of a Russian opera singer, stage actor, and painter Vassily Vassilievich Samoilov. You will have an opportunity to learn about Russian theatrical culture of the 19th-20th centuries. The museum is also by Nevsky Prospekt.
