The Hermitage in the Top 10 World's Most Visited Museums
The State Hermitage in Saint Petersburg is ranked 9th in the list of the most visited museums in the world.
The Art Newspaper, the popular international publication about visual arts, has issued the list of the museums with the biggest attendance number. The first place belongs to the Louvre, as it has been for years now. Several museums in London and in the USA, the National Palace Museum in Taipei and the Vatican Museum are also included in the list, making the Hermitage the 9th in the world and the 6th in Europe with 3, 668,031 visitors in 2015. In comparison to the previous years the attendance of the Saint Petersburg Museum significantly grew, as, for example, in 2013 it ranked 15 in the list with about 2,8 million people a year.
The Hermitage is one of the oldest and largest museums in the world founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and it has been open to the public since 1852.
