St. Petersburg City Day
On May 27 Saint Petersburg celebrates its 317th birthday!
Every year the city comes alive with carnivals on Nevsky prospect, theatrical shows, musicians, painters, dancers, jugglers and magicians. Today all the main events are held online. Except for the traditional cannon shot from the Naryshkin bastion of the Peter and Paul Fortress – it will be fired by the chief doctors of the city’s medical institutions.
The tradition of celebration was laid by Emperor Alexander I. On the 100th anniversary of the founding of the city, the emperor ordered to decorate St. Petersburg and fire a salvo of cannons from the Admiralty, the Peter and Paul Fortress, as well as the entire flotilla on the Neva in honor of the founder of the city, Peter I. Since then the City Day was celebrated only once a century. Only in 1957 it was decided to organize the festivities every year.
We have to dial down the festivities this year, but that only means that the next one will be twice as exciting! So save the date for 2021!
